Opuscula

The fox paws*
Just keep coming

Editor, oh editor, where have you gone?

OHSA took away your spike and your pencil is dull.

Ignorant reporters are writing with a language of their own.

As the little island off Europe's coast,

English is abused, forgotten

Where others fear to tread: The rabbi who wants to innovate

Jan 10 , 2021 https://tinyurl.com/y6xromky

Rabbi talks about the seek for meaning and assume that the pandemic has given us all an opportunity.

Rabbi * * * , the outstandingly unique thinker and equally controversial Jewish philosopher, joins Eve Harow to speak of his ideas to reinvigorate Judaism in the era of modern, sovereign Israel.

"seek for meaning"? Perhaps the writer intended "search for meaning."

Something either is "unique" or it is not One of my favorite faux pas* is modification of "unique." It cannnot be "outstandingly" or "most" or "very" or any other modifier. It is one of a handful of words that, while not unique, cannot be modified.

* The plural form of faux pas also is faux pas. However, it is pronounced differently. The singular form is pronounced / ˈ foʊ pɑː/ and the plural form is pronounced / ˈ foʊ pɑːz/. https://tinyurl.com/y3hqb6s9

No point to this; just bad joke.

A priest, a minister, and a rabbit walk into a blood donation site.

The attendant asks the priest his blood type.

The attendant asks the minister her blood type.

The attendant asks the tabbit its blood time, to which the rabbit replies "probably Type O"

For the obtuse, Type O and typo(graphical error)

Delta removes passengers from plane for private pro-Trump conversation

https://tinyurl.com/yxtah534

Passengers apparently removed for uttering 'Best President ever'. Delta: 'Provocative behavior'.

Delta issued a statement saying the passengers were removed from the flight for "provocative behavior".

"Two customers were removed from Delta Flight 1 departing London-Heathrow today after a disturbance in the cabin resulted in more than 20 customers expressing their discomfort.

"We have spoken with the customers who were removed; they were rebooked on another flight.

"Upon landing the crew was debriefed and multiple passenger statements collected. Based on the information collected to date, it appears the customers who were removed sought to disrupt the cabin with provocative behavior."

The above is an excellent example of imaging a story. There is NO evidence that the passengers said anything "provocative." The sub-head, "Passengers apparently removed for uttering 'Best President ever'. Delta: 'Provocative behavior'." This is not supported by the text.

I'm not sure if Arutz 7, on whose site the above was posted, is anti-Trump or anti-Delta, or simply confused.

2020 sees uptick in anti-LGBTQ hate crime

23 FEB 2021 https://tinyurl.com/f4zbdkrf

Is it REALLY a crime to hate people who are AGAINST hate crimes?

The story supports the idea that "2020 sees uptick in LGBTQ? hate crime," deleting the "anti" (and adding "s" to "crimes").

To be "anti" something means to be against it, to oppose it.

CPAC cancels speaker Young Pharaoh for tweets calling Judaism 'complete lie'

24 FEB 2021 https://tinyurl.com/yw9x2yc8

The Conservative Political Action Conference, the largest conservative conference in the United States, was the focus of controversy earlier this week as one of the scheduled speakers, an online commentator named Young Pharaoh, was canceled after being exposed as an anti-Semitic proponent of racist conspiracy theories.

I have serious doubts the bigot's birth certificate reads "Young Pharaoh." That makes as much sense as naming a person John Doe Senior or referring to a person as John Doe Senior on an obit. John Doe may be "the senior John Doe," but the likelihood that "Senior" is on Joe Doe's birth certificate is minimal at best.

"Young Pharaoh" should have been identified as "the person known as 'Young Pharaoh'."

The Ministry of Health discussed the idea in a meeting on Sunday, the Hebrew paper reports. The goal would be to give returning citizens a certain degree of immediate defense against the virus.

Actually, the newspaper (Yediot Aharonot) is a Hebrew LANGUAGE newspaper; a newspaper printed in Hebrew.

"organized by Mohammed Dahlan, a political rival of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas who is based in the United Arab Emirates."

Who is in the UAE?

Abbas (Abu Mazen) is in Israel, so it must be Dahlan in the UAE,

The sentence should have read: "organized by Mohammed Dahlan, a UAE-based political rival of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas."

Move Over, Goodyear Blimp! Israeli Enviro-Friendly Passenger Blimp is Taking Over

https://tinyurl.com/6mnvtvar 19 Mar 21

Americans are familiar with blimps – non-rigid airships that rely on the pressure of lifting gas to fly — mostly through the three operated by the Goodyear Tire company that carry TV crews high over sporting events like the annual Super Bowl. History buffs recall the 1937 Hindenburg disaster, back in the days when blimps used highly explosive hydrogen gas instead of helium*, when the German airship caught fire and crashed in flames.

A DIRIGIBLE is any lighter-than-air craft that is powered and steerable, as opposed to free floating like a balloon.(https://tinyurl.com/2s6ybm2u). The Von Hindenburg was a Zeppelin, a gas bag with a rigid or semi-rigid internal frame. (https://www.airships.net/dirigible/)

So is the new airship a frameless blimp, akin to Goodyear's balloons or does it have a skeleton?

Apparently the writer neither knows, nor cares, or was working from a puff (pr) piece by an ignorant flack.

* The U.S. had the non-explosive helium in abundance, but despite FDR’s friendship with nazi Germany, the U.S. refused to sell it to the potential enemy, forcing Germany to fill its gasbags with hydrogen. PLAGIARISM is the act of appropriating the literary composition of another, or parts or passages of his writings, or the ideas or language of the same, and passing them off as the product of one’s own mind.

Truth is an absolute defense to defamation. Defamation is a false statement of fact. If the statement was accurate, then by definition it wasn’t defamatory.
