ACCORDING TO tv talking heads, caterers supplying meals at Miami International (and perhaps other) airport are threatening a strike.
I HOPEFULLY the airlines learned from British Airways’ experience when Gate Gourmet, with a little help from BA baggage handlers effectively grounded the airline in 2005.1, 2, 3
I am about to board an international flight (MIA to BCN) operated by American Airlines (AA). AA is one of the major players at MIA and, if a strike is called, the strikers will focus on AA.
I well remember the BA strike, including a remark by a BA business continuity planner that “there was nothing we could do” to keep the airline’s passengers fed.
- BA did “repurpose” customer-facing staff to handle baggage, a task for which they were both ill equipped and untrained.
I’’m not certain the airlines at MIA (and perhaps elsewhere) are prepared for a caterer’s strike or, worse, a secondary strike. U.S. and English laws, both civil (contract) and criminal probably differ.
As for today’s threat, my Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) experience tells me to pack food for the flight, “just in case.”
BA could have “imported” food from other airports on the island.
Likewise, AA can get another caterer, even if only on a temporary basis.
Luggage? If the baggage handlers walk off, that’s a secondary strike and it is against the (U.S.) law.
One HOPES that AA learned — and remembers — BA’s fiasco.
SPECIAL MEALS
My flight is a code share4 with El Al (as well as Iberia, Fin
I believe all El Al meals are kosher — that does not mean “delicious” or even “tasty.”
I wonder if El Al contracts with a separate caterer to provide kosher meals. My guess is “Yes.”
Other airlines also have lots of special diet requests. Not all fly out of Miami, but most have code shares with airlines with flights originating in Miami. My AA flight is a code share with Finnair, Iberia, BA, and El Al.
Maybe I should ask to see a company’s Enterprise Risk Management plan — neither Business Continuity nor Disaster Recovery covers it all — before investing my money or, in the case of airline food, packing my own meals.

PLAGIARISM is the act of appropriating the literary composition of another, or parts or passages of his writings, or the ideas or language of the same, and passing them off as the product of one’s own mind.
Truth is an absolute defense to defamation. Defamation is a false statement of fact. If the statement was accurate, then by definition it wasn’t defamatory.
